The house is quiet, our company has gone home.  We had a wonderful Labor day weekend and now it's come to an end.  Most of the kids should be starting school this week if they haven't already started.

We did a few things over the weekend, and instead of berry picking we did berry eating :) Granddaughter A seems to really love all fruits.  Tho, there's nothing like pulling a fresh raspberry off the bush and popping it into your mouth.

I hope you all had a wonderful weekend no matter how you spent it.

home again

Mifamily

I had an awesome time with our son, daughter-in-law and our two grandsons.  Our new grandson is such cutie pie and a good baby, and his brother is the energizer bunny (lol) but I had a wonderful time helping out.  The "energizer bunny" was my walking partner every day.  Our son had to put a hook on the pantry door to keep him out of it.

I forgot what it was like to live in a home that has been "baby proofed" :)

a busy week

What an awesome week we had with the grandsons.  Mr kept them busy doing "manly" things.

Grand boys

I, on the other hand, did "womanly" things.  I thought I'd share with you the quilt I posted a few days ago, it's the quilt that I had finished at the last re-treat I had gone on, it's called a tossed nine patch or disappearing nine patch, I had made the top a year ago.

Tossed nine patch

I did make another bag/purse for myself, it's the Newport Bag.  I didn't like the length of the handle so I cut it and tied it in a knot.

Bag

We brought the boys halfway home, we met our daughter in Rochester Minnesota which is about halfway between us and then took off down the road to Beloit Wisconsin to drop off our other grandson.  We met our daughter there as our granddaughter was in Rockford Il at a softball tournament.  As we crossed the Mississippi in LaCrosse Wi we stopped at the rest area and took a walk down by the river to stretch our legs.

River

It was a long day and we took different way home, instead of driving on the highway we took the back roads.  We found this cute barn quilt and a nice place to have dinner.

I do have to say that I don't have the energy that I used to, but I do have more patience.

It was fun spoiling them and then sending them back to their parents :))))

Isn't that what grandparents are supposed to do?

Carvings

Oh boy, I can't remember the last time we carved pumpkins with little ones.  The parents of the little ones went away for a few days and we babysat and kept them entertained.  The oldest one called to see if we had any pumpkins that they could carve and we happened to have 4 up at the sign by the road.  So, I gathered them up and brought them in to carve even tho halloween had come and gone.

They turned out pretty good with the help from grandpa.

keeping busy as a beaver

We have been having tomatoes coming out of our ears, we have not only eaten them everyday, I've also made over 40 pints of tomato sauce and more should be ripening in about a week, so I'll be busy again canning more sauce.

Sauce

I made a tasty breakfast over the weekend, Pannukakku is a Finnish ovenbaked pancake.  Look how yellow it looks, that is because I use farm fresh eggs from a neighbor down the road.  We haven't had chickens for a while and I'm so excited that we possibly will be getting chickens again this spring.

It's easy peasy and super tasty with real butter and pure maple syrup :)

 Pannukakku

4 T. butter or margarine

4 eggs

1 cup flour

1 cup milk

ΒΌ tsp. salt

1 tsp. vanilla

Cinnamon

Melt butter in 9x13 pan in oven.  Beat eggs, flour, milk, salt and vanilla and pour in pan.  Sprinkle with cinnamon.  Bake at 450 degrees for 20 minutes or until browned.

The barn is coming along great, the siding is going up and the cupola is started.  I can't wait to show you the cupola when it's all done, there is something awesome we're going to do with it and I can't wait to show you.

Barn boards

We had company over the Labor Day weekend.

Joshskids

The day is not over yet and I'm off now to help paint some barn boards.

this and that

Some of the potatoes got dug up the other day for dinner.  Mr say's there is about 5-6 more baskets like this out there, we didn't plant too many potato plants this year.

Spuds

The barn progress is going slow but good.  We've hired 4 young men to help us on the barn and not sure if they are busy with other things or what, but they've only showed up a few times each, that's okay it's not their job to build our barn, but when they have shown up Mr has gotten a lot of progress done.

Top ridge

I about died when I saw that Mr had put this board up all by himself.

UP ON TOP

I helped Mr put some rafters up using a pulley system.

Holding the rope

I'm still thinking about our trip down to Hot Springs, we had such a wonderful time and I'm missing these guys :)

The grands

But I'll be seeing 2 of them again, I'm flying out on Thursday with our 2 oldest granddaughters to Texas to visit down there.  It's a girls trip, just us 3, I hope they're excited as I am.

the fishing hole

Well it wasn't exactly a hole, it was more like a small lake.  The fishing dock was pretty much right outside the back door, the guys and children seemed to really enjoy dropping a line in the water.

I'm with all the others, I enjoyed the fishing too.

Relaxing

This one seemed to enjoy fishing too, at least he did when he was awake :)

Taking a nap

Can't wait to head to the fishing hole again!

down the road again

Are you wondering if I even have a blog anymore?  I am :)

We skipped out of town and headed down to Hot Springs Arkansas to meet up with 3 of our sons and their families.

The barn

After a bit of car sickness heading through the hills out of here, the rest of the trip was smooth sailing.

Traveling

Crossing the Mississippi in Dubuque Iowa.

The mississippi

I love seeing all the church steeples that you can see while driving through Dubuque.  These are all drive-by shots.

This house up on the hill had a beautiful view of the Mississippi River.

Despite getting sick we had a wonderful time on our trip.  I'll be showing some more photos of the trip when I can.
