Freedom's Memorial

This day is set aside
           to honor those
who took the chance to die.

But they have died in vain
           if we ever forget
                    the reason why.

Freedom can be like time
           slipping away
                    before we even know.

But we all have the choice
           more, a duty
                    to battle freedoms' foe.

Let us give thanks this day
           to all those brave
                    who paid the highest cost.

Not take it for granted
           and realize
                    it easily could be lost.

i got a little crafty this week

My youngest is done with her Junior year of High School.  I can hardly believe that.  Where...Oh where...Did the time go?  Since she plans to graduate early next year I thought of giving her the sewing kit that I was making.

I found a plain inexpensive box at Micheal's and covered it with fabric.  I then added a few things that would be useful.

I found this totally cute pin keeper over at Happy Zombie to make.  When I was a teenager I collected anything that was strawberry related.  I loved STRAWBERRIES!  So of course I had to make this.

Strawberry pin keeper2

It's been awhile since I've been in the crafting mood.  I had fun making this and plan to make one for myself as well.

I even filled it up with needles and safety pins.

Making this pin keeper has gotten me in the mood to start making things again...YEAH!!!!

I really and truly haven't been in the mood to sew, knit or do anything.  I don't know if it's because I'm working or that we have been on the go quite a bit.  Who knows why.  I just know that you might be seeing a few more creative things happening around here.  I have something else brewing right now, but I haven't even started it yet so I can't show you or tell you about it.

Hope you all have had a wonderful week.  I've been neglecting visiting you all and hope to catch up in the next couple of days.

we took a hike and found beauty

Tho we almost missed it.  We didn't know anything was there when we walked by the first time.  Can you see it?

Hidden fawn

Then on the way back Jim whispered to me to stop and get my camera out.  I had no idea what he wanted me to take a picture of because I still didn't see it.  Can you see it?

 On the side

In all the walking/hiking we do we have never seen anything like this.  Can you see it now?

This spotted baby fawn was hidden, I'm sure by it's mama.  It's eyes were open and Jim saw it blink a few times but it never moved.  It was almost like it was frozen.

Curled up

Baby fawn

It must be their natural instinct to freeze like that and totally not move a bit.

We tried to get something to compare it to, to show you how small it was.  We kept looking to make sure that the mama deer wasn't around for fear of it charging at us.

The past few walks I thought of not bringing my camera because we've been walking the same place and there's nothing new to take a picture of.  But, since I have a backpack camera bag it's really not a problem to bring it along.  Would I have been upset if I went with my first thought and not have taken my camera.

just popping in

for a quick post.

We celebrated my MIL's 75th birthday over the weekend.  My husband has 10 siblings and 8 were able to attend the party.  We took both my MIL and FIL out to dinner.

Out to dinner

Here she is surrounded by not only grandchildren but great grandchildren singing Happy Birthday!

Birhday girl

Our grandson was baptized on Sunday.

Here Jim is with one of our granddaughters and this is our oldest son Peter with his youngest.

Gramps and dads

A colorful bouquet from the garden.  These radishes are wonderful, they have a bit of a kick to them.  I can't say it enough how awesome it is to grow your own food.

Life sure is good.

i'm doing a little happy dance

Okay, Okay...A BIG happy dance.

The BLACKHAWKS are going to the Stanley Cup Finals.  The only thing that kind of puts a kink in this, is that they weren't able to play and BEAT the Red Wings to get there.  But, there is a BRIGHT side to all this...and that is, they were able to sweep the team that beat the Red Wings in 5 games.

How Sweet It Is!!!!!!!!!!

time is passing by

Ditch flowers

Where does the time go?  I haven't posted since Wednesday and here it is Saturday already.  How can one be so busy and there is really nothing to show for it.  I guess that's just how life is.  Jim and I have been walking almost every night.  We walk over 3 miles each time.  When we first started walking way back when, just going a half hour was a killer.  Now, a half hour is a piece of cake and doesn't even feel like we've walked at all.  I'm not looking forward to walking in the warmer weather tho and some of the places we have walked lately are pretty wooded and wet.

  Big tree

I know those wonderful mosquitoes will be thick once they come out.  The river has been pretty flooded lately as you can see from the photo below.

Flooded river

We spied a new flower that we have not seen before.

New flower

Lots of flowers but also lots of water as well.

Wet area

Hope you all have been doing well and I hope you have a wonderful weekend.

whole wheat cinnamon rolls

I made some cinnamon rolls with fresh ground flour and they turned out so yummy.

Fresh groung flour

The dough looks very different from being made with store bought flour.  Here's the dough I put to rise.

Rising dough

They baked very well.  I chopped up the pecans a bit too fine but they still taste wonderful.

Whole wheat rolls

Gooey rolls

I cut back on the sugar and honey is added to the dough to make them more healthier.

Plate of rolls

They sure served up good, tasty and just as gooey.

there's nothing like seeing your garden grow

When we were gone we had a lot of rain.  I went to check the gardens the other day and found the lettuce doing great.  This is our first year for lettuce.   I'm not sure if we planted them too close together or not.  We shall see.

The brussel sprouts are doing good too.

Brussel sprouts

Jim ordered some sweet potatoes and they came while we were gone.  They were pretty dry when we opened the package.  But, after soaking the roots and wrapping them in a wet towel they perked up enough to plant.  We'll see how they do.

Sweet potatoes

Harvesting the asparagus.  The asparagus is done for the year.  Since this is the first year of harvest we were only able to cut for 10 days.  Next year it will be a bit longer.  Each year the cutting time gets longer.

Harvesting asparagus

Our tomato plants are doing great as well.   We plan to move them to the area we had them in last year along side the house.  They did really well there.

We have been harvesting onions already and boy are they good.

Life on our little hobby farm on our small piece of land is going good.

random weekend stuff

I went with my SIL, MIL, a niece and great niece to a craft fair.  It was held in a town square and there were lots of vendors to see.

Fair diddley

My great-niece Clare had a ball.

I found some really neat things.  One was a plant for my front porch.  I love hanging plants but they always die on me.  They get the afternoon west sun and it fries them up.  Now I'll have flowers hanging all summer.

Hanging plant

I found a cute sign to hang in the house.  I just hung it under this shelf to take a picture of it, I need to find a spot for it.

I bought a few homemade dog treats for the dogs and they loved them.  I thought I could make my own and looked online for some recipes.  These look good enough to eat and all three dogs loved these ones as well.  Who would have thought dog food could look so good.

Dog biscuits

Jim and our son Josh went fishing and Josh caught a good sized King Salmon about 15 lbs.  They caught 8 fish total.  Ever have a boat named after you?  I do :)

Josh's catch

Jim made a salmon stir fry.  I missed having some by a few minutes.

It's been busy around here.  I took an extra day off from work when we went to Texas and have been enjoying it very much.  When you work only 2 days a week, having 3 days off really makes for some nice time off.

I hope you all had a nice weekend.

You all have a great day today.

it was a long but rather short trip we just took

I hardly took any pictures, we didn't stop at all to sight-see.  Tho, I did take some drive by shots along the way.

The grand kids all together before we left.

Some grandkids

Grandpa giving a push.

Giving a push

All done packing and having lunch.

All done packing

Saying good-bye was hard to do.

We stopped for dinner at a way-side.

Having lunch

Then it was down the road we go.

Heading down the road

Even tho it was a quick trip, it was nice to see parts of the county we don't see very much or at all.

I have to share with you something that happened last night.  We could hear sirens blaring non-stop all evening long.  There was a house burning and it burnt down to the ground not far from our home.  It was a 7-alarm fire and trucks from all over the county came to help put the fire out.  This was a fairly large home and the family was away out of state.  I don't know if that is good or bad that no one was home.  Good being that no one was hurt, but bad that maybe if they had been home they would have discovered it before it got out of hand.  You can replace material things, but my heart goes out for these people who went to celebrate a joyous event in their sons life.

You all have a safe and wonderful weekend.
