Did I tell you we are getting bees?  Well we are.

We bought some honey from a guy selling honey on the roadside this past summer, and Jim ended up talking to him for awhile (which I'm used to).  The man offered at that time to mentor Jim with bees, but we weren't quite ready to get any yet.  Well, the man called Jim last week and asked him if he was still interested in doing bees, that he would still mentor him and show him what all he knows about raising bees.  What an opportunity, it is one we just couldn't pass up, tho we weren't quite ready to start yet, we are now :)

Don't you just love the cute bees and beehive?  My daughter-in-law made them.  They are hand rolled chocolate for the Pooh and Friends cake she made for our granddaughter who turned 2 on Saturday.

Kate had a hard time with Tigger's head, so she had him diving into the cake instead of sitting like the rest.

Isn't it cute?  Kate does such a great job, I keep saying she needs to open up her own business making cakes for all occasions.

Time is starting to wind down for us here :(  I still have a bit more to share with you on our San Antonio trip yet.

a birthday with a theme

Our granddaughter turned 1 down here in Texas and her mom makes the cutest and yummiest cakes.  I thought it was fitting that since we're down here by the gulf, that the cake had a sea/beach theme.

The beach house is quiet, everyone is back to their homes, my sister arrived safely to 30 degree weather and we now have about 10 days left here, then we'll start thinking about heading North.

I have to admit that I do miss home, and I have to admit that I wouldn't mind seeing a bit of snow, but not the negative degree temps.  This is the longest I've ever been away from home.  We are still loving it down here and I know once we get back to the Midwest and the winter weather, I'll be thinking about our walks here on the beach.

I've lots to catch up on, but right now I have a good book calling my name.

amish country and a birthday

Last Friday was Laurens birthday, she turned 17.  We headed out in search of a birthday gift and a place to have dinner.  We found dinner but not a place to buy the gift she wanted.  We really realized just how much we live out in the country.

On the way back home we spied a sign that said "Rugs for Sale".  I'm not sure if I mentioned that we live in Amish country.  Driving to find the Amish farm that is selling the rugs we came upon this view which is overlooking many Amish farms.

The farm selling the rugs.  As we were driving up we could see kids playing out in the yard.  Some looked like they were about the same age.  After talking to the Amish man who makes the rugs, we found out all the kids were his grandchildren.  I think he said he had 20 grandchildren and 5 children, all boys.  The kids were pretty curious and shy of us.

 

 

Driving in our area you can tell if there are Amish living there by the buggy tracks on the roads.

Here's the rug we bought for Lauren to put in her room since we have no carpeting.  I'm not sure why I didn't buy a rug for myself.  Guess I'll just have to go back :)

 

 

After we got home it was birthday cake time.  I think this has to be the smallest birthday party we have had in a long time.  No need to get a big cake if it's going to be just the 3 of us.

We have been doing so much around here,  I can't really say that I'm bored at all.

jim turns 50

It's been pretty busy around here lately.  I had a "surprise" 50th birthday party for Jim over the weekend.  Jim said he had a few hints.  I guess I'm not really good at keeping secrets.  I did put 50 candles on the cake too.  His birthday is the 20th but I had the party on the weekend so that the kids could come.  We had lots of food and cooked out.

 

My dil made the cake.  She really should go into business making cakes.

 

The grand kids watched grandpa open up his cards and gifts.  These two boys ran and had fun the whole evening outside.  I'm sure they slept good that night.

I finally got a pic of the three girls.  I did get a shot of all of us girls together but it really didn't come out too well and a few of them would be mad at me for life if I posted it.

What a fun weekend we had and now we are babysitting one of our granddaughters for a few days.  Her mom and dad flew to Texas to look for a house to rent.  Jason graduates from NIU early May and Jim and I will be helping them move down there.  I can't wait to see what Texas is like.

I have to show you a photo of a great-niece who is going to be a flower girl in her Aunties wedding.  My niece said she tried on a flower girl dress and said "I'm a princess".  I was able to get a photo of her, tho barely, she's pretty shy.  I saw her at a baby shower I went to on Saturday for a dear long-time family friend. 

I hope you all have been doing well.  I couldn't believe it's been almost a week since I posted last.  Life just has taken some turns and it has gotten just down right busy.

sweet 16

My "baby" is 16 today.  When did you grow up?

hats galore!

It was a fun weekend.  We had company and went to a birthday party. 

Our granddaughter turned 9 and for her party she wanted a theme and she picked a "Hat" theme.  So everyone who went to the party wore a hat.  Kiirsti's hat was made out of a an old lamp shade and decorated.

Party goers of all ages got in the spirit of the party theme and wore a hat.

More party hats...some were hand made, some were old and some not so old.

The weekend is over and Monday is here.  We are supposed to be getting some rain this week so I need to get out in my garden today and clean it up.  I have been so behind in doing that this spring.  The river has been pretty high again and with more rain coming this week I hate to see what that is going to do. 

I'm off to get my day going, so you all have a wonderful day today.

a birthday party

Since Monday is Jim's birthday I had his party last night.  I had to share these pictures before I forgot and never posted them.

I'm not sure what this was all about but girls tend to get silly sometimes.

the end of 2008

Dan turned 21 on the 29th.  Such a milestone in a young persons life isn't it?

 

Dan's birthday was a busy day for him at work.  I wondered if he was even going to make it to celebrate his birthday at all and I was too busy to even think about making a cake so I went to the bakery to get one.

   

2008 was an okay year for work for us but 2009 appears to be slowing down a bit.  So we'll just have to pray that all goes well.  I know there are some that have already felt the impact of what's about to come and my thoughts and prayers are with you.

I love blogging and will continue to blog in 2009.  There may be a few changes and I just might do a giveaway this year.  I have also met some really wonderful people through blogging, one who I actually got to meet in person.  That I think was one of the most exciting things to happen for me this past year.  The most exciting thing for me to happen was celebrating 30 years with my wonderful husband who I love very much. 

We are off later this afternoon to visit our daughter Carri and her family in Minnesota.  We should be getting there before the New Year rings in.   I've got my knitting bag packed and I'm ready for the car ride.  We won't be back until late Saturday.

I hope and pray that each and everyone of you has a safe and wonderful time welcoming in the New Year.
